Dr. John Norcini, president and CEO of the Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER), discusses the Graduate Medical Education cap in the US and its impact on international medical graduates (IMGs), who make up 22% of doctors engaged in direct patient care in the US. He also examines the implications for accreditation of international medical schools, reviewing medical accreditation models around the world. Dr. Norcini discusses the work of the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) and FAIMER to support non-US medical schools to become appropriately accredited in preparing their students for postgraduate training in the US after 2023.
