Dr. Mira Irons, Senior VP of Academic Affairs at the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) in the US, discusses professional self-regulation and the importance of assessment in meeting medical educators’ obligations to patients, colleagues and students. She describes the role of the ABMS as it works with specialty boards in the US to develop standards for initial and on-going certification of medical specialists, and examines the lessons learned while helping Singapore strengthen its system of assessments, including the need to tailor examinations to suit local needs.
