Dr. Javaid Sheikh, dean of Weill Cornell Medicine – Qatar, sets the scene for the Innovations for Global Health Professions 2016 (GHPE 2016) meeting in Venice, Italy. He discusses the need for major reforms in health professions instruction and institutions as proposed by the Lancet Commission, and stresses the need for harmonization of accreditation globally, the ability to cope with technological and social disruptions, and the need to develop new competencies to define “professionalism” in health care.
