Dr. Guenevere Burke, Assistant Professor at George Washington University in Washington, DC, talks about her work in the Emergency Medicine Innovative Practice Group developing the use of telemedicine in emergency care. She notes that telemedicine is not actually a new phenomenon but with technological improvements it now has the potential to greatly improve access to timely, patient-centered care. Dr. Burke describes the Connect ER telemedicine follow-up program at George Washington University, and describes the advantages in terms of cost and patient satisfaction. Challenges include educating health care providers how to treat patients in this way – an aspect of telemedicine that is still developing.
